Thats just a rumor you hear people telling you.  Of course you will have spare time, and how much spare time depends on how much you need to study.

Some people study faster than others, thus they will have more spare time.

Well during your first two years you will have a lot of spare time and may party alot and drink.  Classes depending on where you go are more rigorous than others.  Its mostly just pass/fail at the one I go to.  Then 3rd year is h**l because rotations take up a lot of your time and so is 4th year is even worse.  After that residency takes up more time until you are done with residency then you still work alot and work on saturdays.
