During my stay in Tokyo, I wanted to get a souvenir Samurai Sword. Will I be able to fly back to USA with it?

I'm pretty sure I saw on the customs checklist that swords were not allowed on the plane, but what about if I put it with the rest of my luggage that doesn't come with me to my seat? Will bringing it cause problems? Am I going to have to fill out some kind of form or go through an enhanced check out process? Anyone with some insight please let me know, thanx

  1. A good one is expensive!

Do not attempt to take it as carry on luggage. The Japanese are as paranoid in their security as the US security people are and you might find yourself arrested. You should not have too much of a problem if the sword is in your checked luggage, as many foreigners buy them in Japan. It would not be a bad thing to advise the check-in agent that you have it. I brought back a Basque walking stick (a concealed sword) from France, and when I explained what it was, there was no further problem.

If you are flying through a major airport to a connecting flight in the US, you might have to explain it again at customs and recheck-in.

  2. If it's a souvenir sword you have a better chance than a real sword.

    As a carry-on? No.

As checked luggage? It depends on the airline.

You should look up your airline online or call their customer service hotline.

  3. Check the arilines in Japan and in US. I don't think you want to go to jail in either. I do know you might in a checked in luggage but never a carry one.
