During the last (?) Olympics when a guy "attacked" runner, why didn't they give the runner time compensation?

Not only would that shake someone up but since he was in the lead when that crazy guy came out of nowhere and pushed him into the onstanders, it wasn't his fault. That was just wrong anyway you look at it.

  1. That was so ridiculous! I couldn't believe what was going on while I was watching. The man seemed content with his bronze medal, although I'm sure gold would have been better. He did return to Brazil with a hero's welcome, though. The "Irish priest" who attacked him was drunk at the time and served a bit of time in jail. The same man also ran out onto the track during a grand prix race and was almost killed.

  2. I can't imagine how this situation could have been made fair to all involved in the event.  If the Olympic committee had given him extra time, other runners would have room to complain.  There are so many "ifs".

While it truly was wrong, I don't know how the situation could have been handled any better.

  3. I always wondered that! They showed the story again during the men's marathon this year, and I was appalled again by what happened. But they don't give anyone time compensation...for injuries or illness or even getting shoved or knocked down, so maybe as a rule they justdon't give compensation to avoid any discrepancies. I really felt sorry for that guy though, and think he may have won if that hadn't  happened.
