Pilots do run through most of the initil checks and great care is considered during engne start up before taxing out for take-off but not everything can be accounted for. Landing is always hard on the aircraft. In all reality, however, it just depends on what type of malfunction you are referring to. Icing is usually a problem during higher altitude cruises.
