What you believe to be the most important aspect of either Durkheim's theory of religion to our understanding of the role of religion in society? Give some reasons why you think it is an important point.

    If you're focus is what is important to understanding the *role* of religion in society, I would say that the most important aspect of his theory is the functions of religion, specifically social cohesion and solidarity. Religion unites individuals and defines certain norms. It channels emotions for many (love, hate, fear). He coined the term "collective effervescence" for the special energy  that results from group interaction, which he believed was the root of all religion.

    The aspect of social cohesion is extremely important, because it explains how religions survive. No matter the theology behind each religion, the sense of belonging and community that comes out of religious group activity is extremely valuable to the individual. These are things that cannot be attained without group activity.
