into the second round.
World number 220 Lojda stunned the Czech, ranked seventy-eight places above him, in one hour and twenty-one minutes on their first meeting. He not only booked a second round spot but also took lead in the head-to-head series by
1-0 against Gruel.
23-year-old Czech confidently entered the clay court and held his opening serve by hammering powerful forehands and backhands. He then held on to remaining serves until he found the desiderated break in the sixth game and took
the lead. Although Lojda lost the lead by losing his serve in the following game, he broke German’s serve again in the eighth game and held his serve in the follow-up game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 win.
He saved two out of three breakpoints faced and cashed in both breakpoint chances to his advantage. Lojda also registered an impressive 74 percent win on his slightly lower first serve share.
The Ivancice native kept his winning ways in the final set as he broke to love in the very first game to take the lead. Lojda then held on to entire serves and broke Greul’s serve again in the seventh game to eventually seal the
deal with a 6-2 score line.
He clobbered a slightly lower first serve share of 48 percent as compared to German’s 52 percent but earned a perfect win on it. To spice the set further, he faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of four breakpoint chances
to his advantage.
Next challenge for Lojda is sixth seeded German Dustin Brown. Brown rallied past a local qualifier, Tomasz Bednarek in a three setter match to reach this spot on Monday.
Brown registered a perfect win on his lower first serve share in the opening set and broke Poll’s serve twice to win the set with a 6-3 victory.
Bednarek faced no difficulty in the second set and after capitalising on one out of two breakpoint chances to his advantage to bag the equaliser with a 6-4 win.
The seeded German re-focused back into the final set. He faced zero breakpoint and converted one out of four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to pocket the decider with a 6-4 win.
Lojda can upset the seed if he maintains consistency in his game and capitalise more on his breakpoint chances.
