Dust is in the air.  It is a very small partical which floats around us everyday.  Normally you can not see it unless you have a beam of sunlight coming throught the room, then you will see a lot of particals floating around in the air.  Dust is made of a lot of different items such as bits of dirt, pollution from factories and car/trucks which the wind blows around and finally settles down on something which we call dust.  As is accumulate you can see it more and it shows on a dark surface more than a light surface.  Hope this helps.
