Dustin Brown, Matthias Bachinger through to the second round – BMW Open 2012
Dustin Brown beats Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-3
Qualifier, Dustin Brown, won his first ATP World Tour-level match of the season, as he toppled wild card entrant, Daniel Brands, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the first round at the BMW Open in Munich, Russia on Tuesday.
Brown needed just an hour and two minutes to come out victorious from an all German contest.
In the first set, both players made a steady start, as they held their serves in the first nine games and took the score to 5-4 in Brown’s favour. The 27-year-old captured first and final breakthrough of the opener, sealing it
6-4.
Brown struck in the sixth game of the second set and consolidated on it to attain a 5-2 lead. He capitalised on the advantage and served it out at 5-3.
The German bombarded his compatriot with nine aces and 68 percent of the first deliveries. He snatched 33 of the 43 first and 11 of the 20 second serve points. The Montego Bay, Jamaica resident amazingly avoided all the eight break
threats he came across and availed two of the five chances he got in the match.
Brown will lock horns with eighth seed, Marcos Baghdatis, in the second round. Baghdatis overcame Tobias Kamke in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the opener.
Matthias Bachinger defeats Alejandro Falla 7-6(3), 6-2
World number 103, Matthias Bachinger of Germany, took advantage of the home conditions and upset 55th ranked, Alejandro Falla, in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-2 to qualify for the round of 16.
Bachinger and Falla didn't allow each other to break throughout the first set, taking the score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. The German attained a 4-1 advantage and capitalised on it to triumph 7-6(3).
The 25-year-old struck in the third game of the second set and held his following serve, building a 3-1 lead. Bachinger hit the second blow in the seventh and made the most of double break, closing it 6-2.
The German relied on his first serve to win most of the points, banging in five aces and capturing 29 of the 32 points on them. The 6ft 2in tall did not give any break opportunity to Falla and utilised two of the five of his own.
It took Bachinger an hour and 23 minutes to down Falla in an evenly contested contest.
The German is pitted against world number 24, Marin Cilic of Croatia, in the next match. Cilic, seeded third in the draw, received a bye in the first round.
