Dustin Johnson takes lead at Cadillac Championship: round three recap – part 1
The $8.5 million purse Professional Golf Association tour's Cadillac Championship has stepped into the weekend with Dustin Johnson in the lead. Here is quick look at the leader board.
Johnson ended up with a score of 7-under-par 65 in the third round of the championship to take the lead over the field. He netted eight birdies and a bogey to compile a scorecard of 13-under in the three-day session.
He was stalked by a group of three punters that included Nick Watney, Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar. Donald, who won the Accenture Match Play Championship recently, was on his way to produce a bogey-free scorecard until he dropped a shot at the final hole
and wrapped the tournament with a score of 66. Watney was tied in the lead before he drove his tee shot into the water.
Donald who has been part of nine events out of eleven so far is bidding on a fourth victory. He told this to the press who surrounded him while he was on his way to the clubhouse. He said, “I'm certainly playing very good golf right now, some of the best
I've ever played. But I'm still going to keep continuing to concentrate on getting better and hopefully I can have a good day tomorrow and we'll see what happens.”
A four-way tie was seen on the fifth spot of the leader board, which was created by the Aussie Adam Scott, Northern Irish Rory McIlroy, Italian Francesco Molinari and American Hunter Mahan. The Aussie topped the stats in driving accuracy with 78.6 per cent
average. He reeled six birdies against two bogeys to compile an aggregate of 10-under par.
Meanwhile, the Northern Irish star closed the round with two successive birdies with an injury in the right foot. McIlroy is three strokes behind the leader, which indicates he has good chances on clinching a victory.
The 22-year-old rookie is confident that a low number finish is on its way. He told this to the press when they asked him about his future prospects. He stated, “I made six birdies and don’t feel as if I played that well. I am sure there is a low one out
there. I’m not going to go out and chase a number; I’m just going out to play some good golf.”
On the other hand, McIlroy’s Ryder Cup teammate Molinari was not happy with his game. The Italian finished second in driving accuracy, but had two bogeys in the 18-hole session. He did not seem confident about the final round, owing to the difficulty posed
by the course in rough weather conditions.
Similar sentiments were shared by the first round leader Mahan. The American birdied three holes in the front, but could not include accuracy in his strokes when playing on the back. He dropped the shot several times into the sand bunkers and wrapped the
round at a score of one-under-par.
Three-time major winner, Padraig Harrington, followed shortly with a score of nine-under par. The Dubliner was one of the few players who successfully completed the round without falling into a sand trap. He carved five birdies against one bogey to take
a share in the ninth spot.
