Dustin Johnson wins FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind
Dustin Johnson fired a four-under par 66 in the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic to record a one-stroke victory over John Merrick on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
Johnson started his round one stroke behind the overnight leaders, Merrick, Davis Love III and Ryan Palmer.
Right from the first hole, he looked promising and carded a birdie to kick start his campaign on the final day.
Through the front nine, he managed to score three birdies against a lone bogey, to go two-under for the round.
A couple of consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th holes proved to be the turning point of the round, as it allowed him to take the lead in the final moments.
Johnson’s victory in the event was well applauded because of the fact that he suffered a back injury in the past and it was a strong comeback from him on the Tour.
“It feels really good. Especially having so much time off, coming back,” he said. “You know, last week helped a lot competing and getting back in the groove of things. And then, you know, I came out this week and I really -- I just played well all week”.
On the Sunday evening, he also talked about his injuries and how he recovered by taking complete rest as prescribed by the doctors.
“I had knee surgery in the off-season. And then right before the Masters. ...that I just pulled a muscle in the back. And, you know, its fine now,” he said.
“I rested it, did a lot of physical therapy on it, and, you know, stim and ice and manual work. Everything's good, feeling healthy and great. Glad to be back out here”.
It was his second appearance following the three-month break that he had after the back injury.
He suffered the injury while he was lifting a Jet Ski in March and was advised to take complete rest, until he made a return through the Memorial Tournament last week and tied for the 19th position.
The victory at the TPC Southwind was his sixth one on the PGA Tour.
