Dustin Pedroia helps Boston Red Sox topple Detroit Tigers 7-3 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox toppled the Detroit Tigers 7-3 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Monday, July 30 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
It was an extremely important win for the Red Sox, who improved to 52-51 on Monday to replace fourth placed Toronto Blue Jays on the American League East Division standings table.
Dustin Pedroia put up another fine performance as he grounded out to shortstop in the first inning to give the Red Sox a crucial 2-1 lead. Pedroia homered to left in the sixth and Carl Crawford scored to extend Red Sox lead to 4-2.
"Dustin is the most determined, talented player I've ever seen," Manager Bobby Valentine said.
Centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury singled to right in the seventh and Will Middlebrooks connected for a two run shot in the eighth to wrap up an impressive Boston’s victory.
"Obviously the pitch to Pedroia, I completely missed my spot," said Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer, who gave up five runs to take his sixth loss of the year. "That's what's frustrating -- when you don't execute pitches the way you want to and you get burned
by it. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth."
“I think he was a little conscious of Crawford and maybe rushed it just a little bit and probably didn't get it exactly where he wanted to," Jim Leyland said.
For the Tigers, Austin Jackson homered to left centre in the first inning. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila also made useful contributions but their effort did not prove to be enough. It seems the offence will have to come up with big scoring shots on regular
basis to have any chance of beating the Red Sox in this series.
Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz struck-out four to grab his ninth win of the season. Allowing just five hits and three runs in eight solid innings, he created all sorts of problems for Tigers’ hitting line-up. Relief pitcher Vicente Padilla pitched
the scoreless ninth to deny Detroit any chance of a late comeback.
