Dustin Perdroia shines as Boston Red Sox defeat New York Yankees 3-2 in tenth – MLB Update
Dustin Pedroia tied to force the game into an extra inning and Josh Reddick drove in an RBI to help the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 3-2 in the rubber game of the three-game series at Fenway Park in Boston on Sunday, August 7.
The struggling Red Sox entered into the bottom of the ninth inning, as the spectators were silent, but suddenly the stadium became a noisy market when Dustin Pedroia made a game tier sacrifice fly, allowing Marco Scutaro to score. Getting a tied game, the
Red Sox closer Daniel Bard occupied the mound and proved his class with scoreless inning against the Yankees devastating sluggers.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, the Red Sox did not try to make hard hits and relied on stealing bases. David Ortiz doubled to deep-right, then Yankees’ Phil Hughes, serving as closer, allowed an intentional walk to Carl Crawford, sending Darnell McDonald,
who was running for Ortiz, to occupy third base. With two bases loaded, it became pressure game for Reddick, who was 0-for-4, but made his fifth at-bat valuable, touching fast pitch by Hughes to get a leading RBI single.
By taking this win, the Red Sox grabbed the first position in the American League East for most wins. It was also their first series win against the New York Yankees since 2004.
Yankees’ manager was stunned on the sudden change of the game, but he kept his head cool. The Red Sox has made tier against the Yankees’ veteran closer Mariano Rivera, who was not expecting such a blow.
"It's unusual," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "We're so used to seeing him do it, time after time after time."
Yankees’ tied the game 1-all with a ballistic homer by Eduardo Nunez in the fifth and then crushing hit by Brett Gardner in the seventh inning elevated the lead to 2-1.
Freddy Garcia made five innings, allowed one run and five hits. Yankees were stunning after the second inning, as Boone Logan, Cory Wade, Rafael Soriano and David Robertson joined hands to take the game to the ninth inning without allowing further runs.
Soriano and Robertson each tossed one inning.
Red Sox starter Josh Beckett worked six innings and scattered six hits, allowing one run and struck -out five batters. Matt Albers also allowed one run over less than an inning. However, Franklin Morales started the stint with his hitless inning. Dan Wheeler,
Jonathan Papelbon and closer Daniel Bard each crushed the Yankees.
The Red Sox now have 70 wins with 37 at home and are the leader of AL East. Their record can improve further if they manage to overthrow the Minnesota Twins.
