Dusty Baker not pleased with Aroldis Chapman’s somersaults – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds' manager Dusty Baker on Wednesday, June 27, refused to reveal the conversation he had with the team’s closer Aroldis Chapman. The closer, in a state of seemingly wild exhilaration, rolled on the field after the 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers which offended the Reds' managment.
While the Milwaukee Brewers did not openly express their displeasure over the somersaults, the Reds themselves did not particularly seem pleased with this stunt. The left hander was then approached by pitching coach Bryan Price, team manager Dusty Baker and team-mate Jay Bruce.
Milwaukee Brewers' team manager Ron Roenicke did reveal that Dusty Baker had spoken to him, but refused to share the details. Also, simultaneously, Baker came up with his version on the situation.
"I think that's between us and the Brewers," Baker said. "You know, Ron Roenicke was my teammate. He knows me. He knows me very well. He knows how I am, and he knows how I do things. At the time, he was a young player and I was one of the leaders on that team. He knows me."
The left-handed closer, it is pertinent to mention, had entered in the game with four losses to his record in last seven games. This was a tremendous opportunity for him to compensate for what had gone thoroughly wrong for him.
However, his pleasure over the victory and the subsequent stunt was not well-received, leading to the disconcert for him and the team as a whole.
On the other hand, the team manager made it clear he found nothing funny in whatever was done on the field. For expressing the excitement, he said, there are other ways to demonstrate it.
"That ain't funny. Ain't no joke to me," Baker said. "It's been addressed already, and it's over. It won't happen again ... ever. I know he was happy and things have been going poorly for him, but you've got to demonstrate it in a different way."
Whatever the issue, the end result was that the Reds scored a decisive victory over the Brewers. That alone can be the biggest reason to celebrate.
