Dusty Payne and Adrian Buchan emerge triumphant in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Portugal
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne and Australia’s Adrian Buchan emerged triumphant in their respective Round 2 heats at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the eighth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tours, which went down
at Supertubos at Peniche, Portugal, on Saturday, October 13.
Payne got the better of South Africa’s Jordy Smith in the third heat to secure his place in the third round, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival in the process.
The fourth heat saw America’s Patrick Gudauskas tasting defeat at the hands of Buchan to find himself eliminated from the competition while the latter after the intense battle came to an end.
The three-to-five foot waves at Supertubos provided a perfect canvas for the elite ASP surfers to paint with their exquisite performances.
The juice on offer was sufficient for them to cut loose and therefore the day had already seen a couple of perfect 10 rides getting landed, though it seemed that there were more to come later.
After failing to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heat, Payne and Smith found themselves pitted against each other to battle it out for survival.
As the third heat of Round 2 got underway, the South African surfer went through a series of average scores before posting a 4.50 on the score-board.
Keeping the momentum going, he added an additional 6.27 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 10.77 points.
Payne, however, managed to comfortable surpass his rival in terms of performance after getting his hands on a 4.13 and 8.67-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.80 points.
The fourth heat saw Buchan walk away with top honours after managing to survive a nail-biting affair that featured an outstanding performance by both him as well as his rival Gudauskas.
The American surfer posted an 8.40 on the score-board early in the heat and later backed it up with a 9.33-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 17.73 points.
Buchan managed to meet the challenge head on, earning a near-perfect 9.67 off his first business-wave and supporting it with another impressive 8.83-point ride for a heat-total of 18.50 points.
