Goals from Alexander Buttner, Wilfried Bony and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ton-c35408 Lokhoff’s men to keep their Europa League hopes alive.
On Eredivisie match-day 29, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VVV-Venlo-c40915 at De Koel Stadion on Thursday, April 12.
The visiting side dominated proceedings away from home right from the kick-off with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alexander-Büttner-c4818 trying his luck from range in the second minute.
Moments later, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dennis-Gentenaar-c10917, as they continued to live dangerously.
The opening goal arrived in the 11th minute. Buttner played a low pass to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marco-van-Ginkel-c23758, and he made a clever turn before playing a neat through ball for the striker, who raced towards the penalty area before firing a powerful shot into the
top-left corner of the net.
VVV came close to levelling the score-line moments later, but Barry Maguire’s effort was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the Vitesse goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Piet-Velthuizen-c30016.
The Arnhem outfit then had another decent chance, but Van Ginkel’s effort went over the bar, much to the dismay of the Vitesse boss, John van den Brom.
Nicky Hofs fired his shot straight at Gentenaar moments before Wilfried Bony doubled his side’s advantage in the 25th minute. Buttner sent a cross in the penalty area, and the Ivorian ace did well to head home.
Despite going two goals up, the visiting side continued to play in a lively manner and Bony came close to scoring another before the half-time break.
The home side resumed proceedings as the better unit and seven minutes into the second-half, Yanic Wildschut found the back of the net to reduce the deficit. It seemed like the Arnhem outfit might have to pay for their missed opportunities.
However, VVV failed to assert their authority afterwards and never managed to create any more chances to score the equaliser.
At the other end, Vitesse tried to restore their two-goal lead, but failed to create anything of note. In the injury time, Nicky Hofs neatly finished Mike Havenaar’s cross from the left to seal the 3-1 win.
All three points keep the outfit from Arnhem’s hopes of playing in the Europa League next season alive. Occupying the seventh spot on the league table, they have a bright chance of competing in the Europe’s second tier competition next term.
