Dutch International: Malaysia’s Sonia Su Ya Cheah topples Michelle Chan Ky in semi-final showdown
Malaysia’s upcoming young shuttler Sonia Su Ya Cheah made her presence felt as she put up sensational show and ousted Michelle Chan Ky of New Zealand in Women’s Singles semi-final contest at the Yonex Dutch International 2012 in Netherlands, on Saturday,
April 14.
The un-seeded Sonia showed her impressive skills in the game as she outplayed her opponent after in a thrilling rubber-set encounter that kept the local crowd engaged for 49 minutes.
On the other hand, the second seeded Michelle could not tackle the spirited and attacking play of her lower ranked Malaysian challenger and lost the match in three games.
In the first set, Sonia was impressive as she stunned her higher ranked rival in an incredible fashion by setting up a wonderful lead at the initial stage.
She was in full control of rallies and did not let Michelle to take control of the game at any stage until the end of opening half. The spirited Malaysian was ahead on the board until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Sonia continued her superb play against her higher ranked challenger and did not commit unforced errors at any stage.
She was everywhere in the court and took the first game with a wonderful margin of 21-11.
In the second set, Michelle played different badminton this time as she put variations in her strokes. She played with precision and managed a good lead until the mid-game interval.
After the break, Sonia changed her game plan but failed to take any advantage as her higher ranked opponent was in complete control this time.
The Malaysian could not play competitive badminton this time and lost the set with a margin of 14-21.
In the deciding set, Sonia found her impressive rhythm as she controlled the pace of rallies and set up a wonderful lead until the break.
After the break, Sonia maintained her positive and elevated play and did not take much time in winning the final set with a one-sided margin of 21-13.
Sonia put up amazing show and emerged as the winner in the 49-minute semi-final clash with a 21-11, 14-21 and 21-13 score on the board.
