Dutch Open Grand Prix: Eric Pang beats Ajay Jayaram in Men’s Singles quarter-final – Badminton news
Netherlands’ Eric Pang made the home crowd happy when he defeated the higher ranked Ajay Jayaram of India in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 Dutch Open Grand Prix, on Friday, October 14, in Netherlands.
Pang, who is World Number 39 and the fifth seed in the Dutch Open, worked hard for 57 minutes and won the battle in three games with a dramatically tight margin. The World Number 28, Jayaram, failed to make his mark over the local shuttler and lost the match
with a narrow score.
Pang played remarkable badminton in the first game and won it in a completely one-sided way. The second game was quite tough and went into the favour of Jayaram with a close margin. The Dutch shuttler remained lucky in the final set and won it with a narrow
score.
In the first set of the match, Pang played fast and accurate badminton. He missed no chance to bury the bird by executing powerful jumping smashes. Jayaram played negative game by throwing many shots away from the court or into the net. He failed to stop
the aggression of the Dutch shuttler, who won the first game easily with a 21-11 margin.
In the second set of the match, Jayaram played different badminton this time as he remained composed in the whole set. Both shuttlers were moving at the same speed and no one could take a reasonable lead until the ending points of the second set. At this
crucial stage, Pang made an error and paid the price in the form of the set with a 22-24 score.
The deciding game was breath-taking for both shuttlers and also for the local crowd. The score progressed with the same speed as both were playing positive and attacking game. They employed every skill to take a lead but failed until the final points.
Pang remained lucky at the end as he played aggressive game and won the set with a surprising margin of 24-22. The concluding score of this wonderful battle was 21-11, 22-24 and 24-22.
In the semi-final, Pang will be up against Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chen Chou, who defeated another Indian, Arvind Bhat in three games.
