Dutch Open Grand Prix: Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul win Mixed Doubles title
Thailand’s second seeded couple of Songphon Anugritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul won the Mixed Doubles title after beating their higher ranked compatriots, Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam in the final of the 2011 Dutch Open Grand Prix,
at Almere, Netherlands, on Sunday, October 16.
Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul, who were seeded at number two in the main draw of the tournament, played surprising badminton against the favourites and top seed compatriots Prapakamol and Thoungthongkam and won the battle in straight games by consuming
just 33 minutes in the court.
The first set was close in the opening half but Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul remained successful in creating difference in the concluding points and won the set with a reasonable margin. The top seeds failed to dominate the rallies in the ending points
in the first game.
In the second set of the match, the fight remained close throughout the set and no couple could create a comfortable gap until the match entered into the finishing points. Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul remained lucky to finish off the second set by
playing better badminton and won the game with a narrow margin.
The star of the opening set was quite interesting when both Thai couples employed every skill to dominate the rallies. However, they remained close as they knew each other’s game and progressed with the same pace in the match. Until the break, Anugritayawon
and Voravichitchaikul were slightly ahead against the top seeds.
After the interval, Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul lifted up their level of play by controlling the bird at the net and won the game with a decent score of 21-17.
In the second game of the title match, Prapakamol and Thoungthongkam played better game and remained close to their compatriots in the whole set. The score entered into the tensed situation as both couples reached at the ending points without taking any
lead.
Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul remained successful in playing fast and positive badminton at the end and won the set with a tight margin of 24-22. The final score of this straight-set final match was 21-17 and 24-22.
