Dutch Women’s hockey team humiliate Investec South Africa by 5-0 – Hockey Update
The Women’s hockey team of Netherlands has emerged victorious over visiting South Africa 5-0 in the first test of the two-match series being held in Ede, Amsterdam on July 27, 2011. Despite putting all of their efforts, the young and brave South Africans
failed to mark any goal in the seventy minutes of play.
Investec South Africa came to the Netherlands after drawing a series against Belgium in which they won a single game while lost and drew one game each in the three-match series. The results were not impressive for the South African team against a low-profile
Belgium squad that decreased their confidence in the match against Netherlands.
The Dutch squad established their dominance over the field in the first frame of play, obtained a couple of goals in the head of penalty conversions and put visiting South Africa under heavy pressure. Both goals were scored by Maartje Paumen – the skipper
of the host team.
It was the fourth competition in the fifth day on their tight schedule in which they would contest eight fixtures out of nine days in the European Tourney.
However, the young and brave squad of South Africa under the captaincy of Marsha Marescia rendered an outstanding performance and earned plenty of goal-scoring chances, but it was not their day and they failed to avail all of them.
The two squads put extensive effort in the opening period, as the score remained the same in the half-way to the first round. South African players including Celia Evans, Shelley Russell and Jade Mayne accomplished consecutive attacks but Floortje Engels
– the Dutch custodian was brave enough to deny all the strikes.
On the other side, the South African goalie namely Hanli Hattingh also made numerous efforts to keep the score at nil. In the later period, Maartje Paumen managed the brace of goals and put the host side in the way to success.
In the second half, the Dutch team started the game in quite a furious style and expanded the advantage in the very early minutes. Ellen Hoog scored two back-to-back goals and increased the lead up to four. In the counter-offensive effort, Kelly Madsen received
a brilliant pass from Sulette Damons but failed to pass through the Dutch goal. Kim Lammers was the other attacker from Netherlands who accounted for a single goal and sealed the victory for the Dutch.
The second and final fixture of the two-match series will be contested on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Following the encounters, the South African squad will leave for Ireland to hold a three-game series.
