Dutch duos remain undefeated in the qualifiers at Silesia Open – Volleyball news
Two Dutch pairs worked out great performance at the qualifying stage of the Silesia Open men’s beach volleyball tournament on Wednesday and reserved berths in the Main-Draw.
The pairing Brouwer and Meeuwsen pulled off success in two matches and earned one bye, which helped them to advance to the next stage of the tournament. On the other hand, the second Dutch team of Stiekema-Varenhorst did equally well and finished the Qualification
Tournament with a perfect record of 3-0. They finished the day without losing a single set and settled for the 32-team Main-Draw stage.
The ninth-seeded Brouwer/Meeuwsen earned a bye in the first round. Next up, they went into straight action and took on China’s Zhou-Li. The Dutch tandem posted 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) victory over Chinese counterparts in 34 minutes. The 24th-seeded Zhou-Li proved
to be not so strong team and easily accepted defeat in the match.
With one-victory in the hand, Brouwer-Meeuwsen went against Mussa-Jackson of Venezuela in the final match of qualifying round. The Venezuelan pair dropped the opening set with a margin of 8 points but put up a great fight in the second set. The Dutch claimed
second set with just 2-point lead. However, the match ended in the favour of Netherlands’ pair and the set scores were 2-0 (21-13, 23-21).
Brouwer-Meeuwsen remained undefeated in the qualifying round and successfully captured a slot in the Main Draw.
Following the footsteps of their country mates, the second Dutch pair of Stiekema and Varenhorst exhibited spectacular show of volleyball and pulled off success in all of their matches.
In the first encounter, Stiekema-Varenhorst overpowered the Polish duo Kmiecik-Bernat. It was fairly easy game for Dutch pair and they attained winning status in less than half an hour. The Poles could not penetrate the power of spikes from Dutch side and
scored only single-digits score in both sets. Stiekema-Varenhorst bagged first win of the day by sending 21-9, 21-7 in two sets.
After beating the Polish duo, the Dutch tandem came into contest with the German side in the round-2 of the Qualification Tournament. It was just another easy challenge for 15th-seeded Dutch team to overcome 18th-seeded German pairing of Kaczmarek-Walkenhorst.
The match lasted for two sets and covered its length in 33 minutes, 2-0 (21-15, 21-11).
The outstanding Dutch pair gave the final shot of the day against German Dollinger-Windscheif. The Germans had a good attack strategy but they suffered the damage due weak defence. Stiekema hit with great power, while Varenhorst directed the ball in gaps
and corners. The German players failed to dig many of the opponents’ side and finally lost the match 0-2 (19-21, 13-21).
The successful Dutch teams will now join the action at Main Draw slated for Thursday.
