Jessica, Romijn is a Dutch surname, if someone somewhere has taken the trouble to define it's meaning, then I would imagine that it not an uncommon surname in the Netherlands  :o)

All of the Romijns that are available for lookup on the Ellis Island website ( www.ellisisland.org) are from the Netherlands; however, there aren't many of them, thereby indicating to me that the name isn't as common as some of the other surnames out there. There are six people named Romijn in the Social Security Death index, but the majority of Romijns who came to the U.S. likely changed the spelling of their name so that their name wouldn't look so "foreign"  In many Dutch words (not always) the "ij" sound gets changed to a "y".

It is not that common a surname, though it's unmistakably of Dutch origin. There are different ways of spelling it - Romijn, Romeijn, or Romeyn. All of which mean "roman". The name could be linked to a specific part of NL though, some family names are extremely localized (some people don't get out much, and that seems to be a genetic thing).

Upon searching, I came across another Romijn who has been researching her genealogy since 2001. I added the link to this specific genealogy page. She states she found about 300 Romijns after an intensive search, but she only included her direct ancestors. At the bottom of the page is an e-mail link, she is willing to share her information with others, should you be interested.

Romijn is a Dutch name, yes. It's pronounced like "rom-airn" (with an English accent), or "rom-aehn" (with an American accent). Not "rom-idge-in" like a lot of people assume ;)

I think it's quite common. My family are Belgian, and I've heard it quite a bit in Belgium too. I think the meaning is similare to "Roman" in English.
