Dutch women thrash Australia by 3-0 in Rabo FIH Champions Trophy
The first day of the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy concluded at Amstelveen in Netherlands, where the hosts scored a dominant victory over Australia by 3-0 in the final game of the day.
The Dutch women dominated the entire match by scoring two of their three goals in the first half and the third one in the second half. This was the first ever victory for the Dutch women over the Hockeyroos by a margin of more than two goals in a Champions
Trophy.
The Dutch women showed great control over the ball in the first half, in fact during the entire match. They imposed a great pressure on the Hockeyroos, pressed them very hard and kept on creating their goal-scoring chances throughout the match.
The Dutch team started the first half in a fine and spectacular fashion by scoring their first goal within seven minutes after the start of the play, when Maartje Paumen made a wonderful strike on a drag flick, putting it into the top right corner of the
goal-post in her typical style and put the Dutch women ahead of their opponents by a single goal.
The lead doubled in the later part of the first half, when Lidewij Welten converted a wonderful pass from Kim Lammers into the second goal of the match.
On the other side the Australians tried very hard to stop the Dutch women from doing further damage, whereas they also created some wonderful moves in the later part of the first half, but they could not find the right way to the Dutch goal-post and remained
goal-less to the interval. The Dutch women continued with the same fashion in the remaining time of the first half, but no further goal was scored after that and the first half ended at 2-0 to Netherlands.
In the second half, the Hockeyroos looked much improved with their attack and came very close to score goal on a number of occasions, but Netherlands' defenders, along with their goal-keeper proved tough to tackle the Australian attack.
Kellie White, Anna Flanagan and Emily Hurtz made some wonderful moves, but having no result for the Hockeyroos. However, the Dutch women further enhanced their lead in the 57th minute, when Wieke Dijkstra made the third strike for the Dutch and
left nothing for the Hockeyroos. The match concluded at the same score that is 3-0 to Netherlands.
