How much extra do you have to pay for bringing a $1500 item from the US into Canada?

I will only be there for a few hours or so to pick it up...

Can you even do this?

I live in Canada.....

  1. It will depend on what the item is, they have different duty rates on items.

Your best bet would be to call the border services and ask,  since we do not know what it is, as well we do not have their formula for calculating duty, all you are going to get is guesses and a guess is not going to suffice here, after all I would not want you to get to the border and find out you have to pay this completely silly amount!

Edit: I was just reading the I declare section.....the link is http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/...   Regular Duty rate is what you will be looking for

  2. I live on the U.S. - Canadian border (Windsor, Ontario - Detroit, Michigan) and travel back and forth frequently.

I am pretty sure that with the implementation of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) duty has pretty much been eliminated regarding articles brought into Canada from the States.  Basically, sales tax (either GST or PST..not both and I'm not sure which exact one) is all they make you pay.

Try going to the Canadian Border Services Agency website:

    www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca

I'm pretty sure they'll have a page on that website that addresses your question fully.
