Dvd laser pointer with different diode?

Can I use a dvd reader's diode to make a laser pointer?

If I can,what are the different of the laser?(burner and reader)

Is there any different between 1X and 16X dvd burner's diode?

Yes you can.  There are several articles on "how-to".  Here is one:

The difference between a 1X and 16X is the power rating.  Obviously the 16X will have to have more power than the 1X because there is not as much time to 'burn'  the disk at 16X as there is at 1X.
