Dvd player/video cassette recorder

I have an INSIGNIA DVD PLAYER/VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER, MODEL # IS-DVD040924 for some reason it will only play store bought and store rental discs. I can not get it to play my home made DVD+R and DVD+RW discs is there some way to to fix this problem.....please tell me there is
