  1. basically Cd's and dvds are both types of storage media, and dvd is newer and has more storage (4.7GB compared to 700MB of a CD)

a cd-rom or dvd-rom is a factory pressed cd or dvd ie. one that hasn't been burnt at someones house on their pc burner and this is what most commercial software games, media etc comes on

a cd-r is a type of cd that people can write information onto in their own pc burner, but it can only be written to once

a cd-rw is like a cd-r except it can be erased after writing to it and it can be written to again and again and again

with dvds the suffixes are pretty similar except there are two rival formats of dvd, dvd-r/rw, which is backed by the official dvd forum, and a revision of the specification, dvd+r/rw which is supported by the +rw alliance, a group of companies.

originally, the main difference between the two were that the only "-" format was -r, and the only "+" format was +rw. now, however there are one time recordable and rewritable discs of each version.

because +r/rw came later, it is incompatible with older dvd drives, although it is apparently more accurate when writing to it.

the DL suffix stands for dual-layer, and means just that, the dvd has two layers and therefore can store twice as much data, approximately 8.5GB.

so that's it- dvds are similar to cds but can store alot more data, and come in dual layer versions which can store even more, and the r/rw means whether the disc can only be written to once, or many times
