  1. No DVD recorders don't rely on media that can become easily damaged.  DVD recorders save to a media that is much more durable than tape.

Here are some alternatives to taping:

I frequent the above store often, and have made several purchases from them for business and home use.  They offer great prices, great customer service, and a great website.  Simple and easy to use.

  2. i would opt for a duel dvd +vcr that way you can tape away then convert your tapes to disc prices are reasonable for both machine and discs

  3. The prices still vary, from $100 to $1,000 and then some, depending on what you're getting.  DVD recorders are absolutely worth it and are generally user friendly.

My advice would be to go to Best Buy or another specialty electronics store and speak to a knowledgable employee, or do some searching on your own (Consumer Reports or CNet have some good information).  You'll want to make sure you get the right thing (whether or not you need a tuner, if you're going to hook it up through a satellite dish or cable box, if you want a hard drive or a VCR attached, if you have HD capabilities, etc.).
