Dvd recording discs. Difference Please?

Can anyone tell me the difference between

DVD-RW And DVD+RW Recording discs.

They basically are the same, but some DVD players will not recognize either the + or the - format.

From my experience, DVD-R and DVD-RW are most widely accepted by other DVD players.

DVD-R and DVD-RW disks also need to be "finalized" before they will play on other machines.  DVD+R and DVD+RWs don't need this extra step.
