Dwain Chambers sprints into semis
Former drugs cheat Dwain Chambers has secured his place in the 100 metres semi final of the European athletics championships in Barcelona.
The shamed sprinter qualified with a time of 10.21seconds in a comfortable first heat where he ran into strong headwinds.
The sprinter said: "I felt comfortable not to go too hard so soon in the race, I felt good on the warm-up track and the warm-up track is pretty fast so I didn't want to go out too hard and not leave myself anything for tomorrow.
"Once I got out I actually felt how strong the wind was as well, so I just thought: 'Let's coast comfortably and obviously you've got to do all the work from tomorrow onwards,' so I was happy with it."
Chambers won his heat at a canter slowing after 70 metres to keep some in the tank for the semis where he will have to face the latest sprint sensation Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre. Both speedsters look to be on good form and the prospective meeting between the duo will be one to savour.
If Chambers does take gold it will go some way to making up for his 2002 success which was sent back in the post following his two year ban from the sport for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Also in the semi-finals will be fellow Brits Mark-Lewis Frances and James Dasaolu who qualified within their heats.
