Dwarf Hamster Questions?

Question

I heard dwarf hamsters fon't get along, yet the ones in petstores do?

Is this because they're siblings and have grown up together?

How can you tell how old a petstore hamster is?

Dwarf hamsters usually do get along but not all the time.  Personality and age can play a factor in that.  The guys you see in the pet store together grew up together and that is why they get along.  It's almost impossible to introduce two dwarf hamsters that don't know each other.  Fighting is usually the end result.  When you want a pair of hamsters it's advised to get them from the same cage.  

I usually determine age by their size.  If they are small I assume they are the younger ones.  It's not always easy to tell with hamsters.  Once they get to a certain age their size stays the same usually until they get really old and start losing some of their body weight.  

Either way, when you choose a hamster look for one that is active, alert, has a shiny coat, and has healthy looking eyes.

Dwarf hamsters, unlike Syrians, are social animals and generally like to live together (although there are some exceptions). Often, you will find that the hamsters in the store get along because they are from the same litter, which is why Syrians can be kept together while they're young and in the store. However, dwarf hamsters should get along as long as they are introduced at an early age. The problems with aggression and territory develop when sexual maturity kicks in.

In terms of age, look at their ears. If they have small white hairs on their ears, this indicates that they are young and that they may not have reached sexual maturity.

Dwarf hamsters DO get along. They are social hamsters unlike Syrians.

Sometimes it is, depends on their personality.

I had 2 dwarf hamsters from different litters and they did not fight, most pet store workers can tell you how old the hamsters are.

Dwarf hamters are social wich means they do get along but not all the time like mine they fought after a while and they were from the same litter. So yes it is because theyre siblings and have grown togther but some dont as I have already said. The hamsters that arent social are Syrians you can only get one in one cage or theyll fight till death. To your 3rd question ust ask the petsore people but hamsters from shelters and breeders are usally better or tame and like people better.
