Question:

Dwarf puffers, snail in 5 gallon aquarium??

Hi everybody. I was just wondering if a 5 gallon aquarium would be a suitable home for 1 (or 2) dwarf puffers. I also have a mystery snail, and heard they like to munch on these...is this always the rule, or is it possible that the snail will be ok? It is larger than the puffers, however this may not matter.

On a different note, I had 3 male guppies that died over a 3 day span (one died every day). My ph is somewhat high and nitrite is also at 3.

So, I'm just wondering if:

1. I can keep the puffers in that size aquarium

2. If they will definitely eat my snail

3. Any aquarium advice so I don't lose the new fish like the others.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. 1-2 dwarf puffers will be fine in a 5 gal tank but it needs to be heavily planted.  As far as the mystery snail I would not recommend trying to keep it with the puffers despite its size they will still likely pick at it.   As far as advise given you don't know what killed your guppies I would recommend cleaning out the tank, replacing the substrate and then re-cycling the tank.  Since the tank needs to be heavily planted if the plants come from a tank with fish in it they will have some of the bacteria needed for the cycle which will speed up the process

  2. I had three dwarf puffers in my 5 gallon, they did fine, although I wouldn't recommend putting a snail in their, that is a delicacy to puffers and even a bigger snail can be defenseless against puffers...
