Dwarf rabbit issues!!! Please help!!!?

I have two questions. One, my dwarf rabbit is about 8 weeks old and I am wondering how much I should be feeding him and if he is ready for lettuce and other veggies? He eats ALOT so I have started putting only 1/4 cup of pellet in his bowl a day. But the guy I bought him from told me to wait 4 months before I give him veggies... I just dont think this is right.

Two, how can I get him to go to sleep at night!? He sleeps in a cage in my room and is driving me absolutely insane! I love him to death and would never want to get rid of him. So how can I tame his wild ways at night? During the daytime he is calmer.

  1. Don't feed  iceburg lettuce. Since dwarfs are a small breed, they don't require nearly as much food as a larger rabbit would. Feeding 1/3 to 1/2 a cup a day would be fine. Since the rabbit is so young, you can feed a bit more if needed.

Here is a good website that list some good food to give your rabbit and also has other good information on it:

  2. You can't get him to sleep at night, that's the time when bunnies are most active. Bunnies need at least 2-3 hours out of their cages everyday. It's understandable why you wouldn't want them out at bedtime, but if you let them out at night when they will be more active they might be calmer.

  3. Well all bunnies under 6 months should have unlimited food because this is the time when they grow the most. Always have hay available for him too.

Veggies can be given. Test out romaine lettuce, parsley, mint, kale, banana, and baby carrots. Only a little at a time. Just like little kids, bunnies can have sugar "overdoses." And if he gets malformed poops then stop with the treat that is causing it.

Bunnies need a few hours of play outside of their cage every day. If he lives in a tiny cage, this is one reason why hes "crazy". Getting him neutered will help him calm down as well.

  4. Either learn to sleep with the noise or move his cage to another room.  Rabbits are very active at night.  This is their natural instinct.  Cover of dark helps protect them from predators.  Just think how noisy you must seem to your poor rabbit during the day when he is trying to sleep and you are crashing about your room blasting your stereo!

Second.  Hold off on the veggies a bit.  The rabbit's stomach has to acquire the necessary bacteria to be able to digest the veggies.  Never feed iceberg lettuce.  Romaine is better or chicory.  Dandelion greens and carrot tops are favorites.  Rabbits also like bread.  So try giving the pellets...maybe increase the amount....some bread, alfalfa hay, a carrot here or there, and some old fashioned Quaker oats.  There are also plenty of treats in the pet stores to select from that will make your bunny happy.  Try the corn and veggie puffs or sticks, popcorn/seed sticks, the little corn cobs, and timothy and alfalfa cubes.  Your bunny would also enjoy chewing bark off of thin tree branches especially apple tree branches.  This helps to keep their front teeth filed down.  Remember.  A rabbit is not a rodent whose front teeth grow to a certain length and then stop.  A rabbit is a lagomorph which means their front teeth grow continuously and need to be filed down naturally by chewing on things.  Hope this helps.  Good luck and love your bunny to death!!!!

  5. I think that it would be fine to feed him veggies. but don't give him ice burg lettuce. Go to Rabbit.org and find the list of fruits and veggies that are okay for rabbits to eat. There are somethings that are not good for them.

Also. what i do with my bunnies. is i cover them with a sheet at night. They stay quieter that way. They don't see anything out side of their cage.

  6. He is a rodent, face it. Rodents are active at night. Listen to the guy and wait to give your bunny veggies because it may give him the poopers.
