Question:

Dwayne Peel?

Am I the only person who thinks Dwayne Peel kicks the ball from the set-piece too often? Time and time again I see him picking the ball from the scrum or ruck, only to kick, and this is when the team are NOT under pressure from their opponents. He definitely was not doing this early on in his playing career, maybe it was something that Gareth Jenkins encouraged him to do. I can almost predict every time he is going to do this. Fair enough the odd up-and-under where appropriate is fine and dandy, but when he's got really skilled backs waiting for the ball, that should always be the first option. I can't see why this isn't pulled up by the coaches. I also think that he is sometimes way too slow in carrying out this kick, and in real danger of a charge-down, or having the ball stolen.

Most other things in his game are OK in my opinion, and he does break the gain line when opportunity arises, but so does Mike Phillips.

Anyone else see this?

  1. Sometimes I can see that!

  2. Dont dish Dwayne - hes a d**n good player as is Mike Phillips. Mike Phillips has no displine as per Saturday's game. Hes very hot headed

  3. Peel is all class. Silky smooth passes. He would be in my starting 15. Phillips is a Justin Marshal clone - but only a fraction as good at the minute.

  4. dwayne peel is a fine scrum half

george gregan used to kick a lot too and i dont think you could question his quality

  5. I think many of you are unfair to Dwayne Peel, he's a really good player, but it's true he looks as if he has been somewhere else since the beginning of this year's 6 Nations Tournament. Seriously I think every player goes through a moment like the one he's in. Remember Ronan O'Gara during the last World Cup, but now he plays much better again. So I think it's just a question of time. Be patient!

Concerning Mike Phillips, he plays well too, but sometimes he seems too self-confident. Don't you agree?

  6. I hate box kicking...

    Hurts like h**l.

  7. I tend to agree with you.  He reminds me a bit of Johnny Wilkinson, kicking when there is no pressure when he could be running the ball and keeping possession.

But as one poster has stated, all players go through a bad patch, and O'Gara is a prime example of this!

No doubt he will prove his form again, but he has one h**l of a fight on against Phillips.......who's only sin at the moment is his discipline!

  8. he does use the box kick too much but I think that's more to do with Robert Jones than Gypo. Robert Jones was a quality player who always overdid the box kick.

  9. Kinda torn on this one.

I think he's a good player but he's not been given much opportunity lately.

Like all the Welsh players, he can be really good at times, but can also have a quiet game.

Mike Phillips was an idiot last Saturday - getting himself sent off.  On the whole though, our discipline was better than usual.
