Dwight Howard: Lockout is a time for introspection – NBA Update
Dwight Howard has always been an active person, both on and off the court. Known for his frank comments, the Orlando Magic big man recently suggested that players should utilize the lockout period to get in touch with who they
are and ponder upon their present as well as future lives.
This advice by Howard seemed to have stemmed from his personal experience. He has often spent time away from the game doing unusual things, which has hugely enhanced his self awareness and helped him maintain a friendly image.
His applied formula is a successful one, as evident by his relationship with the fans as well as his general appeal. Howard voiced his opinion stating that other NBA stars should also get away from the game every now and then,
and said that the lockout provided them a perfect opportunity to do so.
"It's weird, but I think it's a good time for myself and the other guys to really find out what we're all about," Howard said. "Most people view us as just basketball players, and we can use this time to learn about ourselves and
explore things that we wouldn't have the time to do if we were in season."
This is Howard’s style to create a life outside of the NBA. He uses basketball as a tool to travel around the world, act as an entertainer and be a source of help to children. Just this summer, he visited China for a promotional
tour, assisted the Alabama tornado victims and attended the San Diego Comic Con festival.
Although it is true that not all basketball players have the kind of options that Howard has, it still does not restrict them from exploring things beyond basketball, even if it is just reflecting over what the future holds for
them. All players have to come face to face with these questions someday.
Howard also believes that time spent in search of inner peace can also help a player improve his game on the court as it instills confidence and self belief. Recently, Howard expressed a strong desire to play in the Chinese Basketball
Association during the lockout. It is suggested that this move might be in direct relation to Howard’s inclination of experiencing more than just basketball itself.
Players like Deron Williams and Marcin Gortat have already made foreign moves to Turkey and Russia respectively. Others like Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade are also reportedly in the hunt since FIBA cleared the way for all players.
Whether players will heed to the Orlando Magic star’s advice or not, remains to be seen, but given his status in the basketball world, his words are expected to carry some weight.
