Dwight Howard keeps his word; Meets Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to discuss future – NBA News
Dwight Howard is making full use of his spot on the Los Angeles Lakers, by planning to work out with legendary former Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Howard took to twitter a few days ago to inform his new fans of his plans to work out with Jabbar, after he is able to return to the court, as he is currently rehabbing from a back surgery that he underwent back in April.
And the Superman kept true to his word, by having a meeting with the legendary big man on Monday.
“Just sat down with @kaj33. Man God is so good. Was in tears. What a blessing. This is like a dream come true. Go Lakers,” tweeted Howard after having a sit down with the Hall of Famer.
Howard then posted a picture on him and Jabbar together with the caption, "Me and @kaj33 together. For many years to come."
The “many years to come” part will come as a great relief for many Lakers fans as well as the Lakers front office since Howard is expected to become a free agent next summer, and has categorically stated that he will not sign a
contract extension with any team until the end of the season.
Howard perhaps wants to test the waters before committing long term, and does not want to commit the same mistake he made back in March when he decided to opt in for the final year of his contract with the Orlando Magic. He quickly
changed his mind about staying with the franchise, and had to go through a tough few months as the Magic looked for trade options. Had he been a free agent at the end of the summer, he could have chosen any team he wanted.
Jabbar also posted the same picture of the two on Twitter and wrote, “#Dwight Howard Great meeting you today - Laker Nation is in great hands for years to come. Now let’s WIN a championship."
He later added, “#DwightHoward thankful to impart my knowledge to a highly-motivated, gifted, athlete with integrity and focus on the prize - a championship!"
Jabbar worked with Andrew Bynum, the former big man of the Lakers from 2005 to 2009. At that time, he was a special consultant to the Lakers and Bynum was in his early years in the league. Bynum stopped working with Jabbar in
2009, telling the Lakers coaching staff that he was no longer interested in working with the Hall of Famer.
Jabbar’s contract as a special assistant with the Lakers ended in 2011, and it is unclear if he will return in the same capacity next season. Shortly after he was released by the team, Jabbar criticized the Lakers front office
and ownership for not giving him a statue and asking him to take a pay cut.
