Dwyane Wade likens Miami Heat to past greats – NBA Update
In a recent protracted interview, Dwyane Wade likened his Miami Heat side to some of the greatest teams in the history of the NBA. Wade was speaking in the context of having so many great players joining forces, which has happened
in Miami and has drawn the ire of the larger NBA community.
Miami Heat last summer signed three esteemed free agents to form the most talented trio of basketball players anywhere in the NBA. Dwyane Wade, a former NBA Finals MVP who has been with Miami throughout his NBA career, committed
to Miami once more. He was joined by arguably the best basketball player on the planet, LeBron James, who left the Cleveland Cavaliers in acrimonious circumstances. The last of the trio was Chris Bosh, formerly of the Toronto Raptors and one of the best power
forwards in the game today.
The splendid array of talent at the Heat’s disposal saw them emerge as a power house team not just in the Eastern Conference, but throughout the league. The Heat steamrolled their way into the NBA Finals; where they eventually
lost to the Dallas Mavericks.
Miami’s constant vilification at the hands of the media and NBA fans has resulted in many people drawing comparisons with the “NWO” (New World Order) of the wrestling world. In the 1990s Hulk Hogan, one of the most popular wrestling
stars ever, joined forces with other big names and their faction, the NWO, turned into a hated figure for the crowd. The storyline continued for many years in the WCW.
Wade responded in a light hearted manner to the comparisons in the interview,
"In a sense, right?" he said with a laugh. "We're game-changers in that capacity. We set a trend in the way of how it was done”
Wade then continued to state his case and quoted the examples of many great teams in the past. His main argument was the fact that Miami had not really done something unprecedented. The Heat side had probably 3 Hall of Fame level
players playing together, but Wade pointed out that so did many great past sides in the NBA,
“But we really haven't did too much different than what was done back in the day. When you think about the great teams, the Bill Russell teams, you think about all these teams that have four Hall of Famers, three Hall of Famers,
five Hall of Famers. It's just now in today's world, social media, and all these things; it becomes bigger than it was back in the day. But, it was some of the same stuff happening [back then]."
