Dye from black to brown?

I have naturally reallly dark brown hair, almost black and i tried to dye it a deep purple. But all i got was a light sheen of purple in the sunlight. I'm looking to dye it either a lighter purple shade, or a nice neutral brown, but I know if i choose the actual shade of dye I want, it will hardly work. Soo do you think if i chose a much lighter shade than the colour i want, it'll turn out okay?

  1. Im not sure but you might be better going to the hairdressers Good luck.

  2. To lighten dark hair, especially if you applied a dye to it already that was a dark color, the only way to lighten it would be to bleach it. Then if you want it a specific color you will have to dye it again after bleaching. They also have dye removers but they're extremely harsh on your hair and leave it this orange yellow gross color that you have to dye back over. I would have it lightened at a salon because it will be more difficult than simply dying your hair again. Home bleaching is very difficult and usually does not have good results. I also wouldn't recommend going to a cheap salon where you can get $10 haircuts because trust me, I will never ever let one of those people touch my hair with dye or bleach again for highlights or anything. They just don't have the skill and experience to do a good bleach job.

  3. Miko basically has the right answer here. You can't lighten dark hair on your own unless you bleach it first. You need to have a stylist bleach your hair down to a lighter shade and then put the brown on and then a toner. The same with if you were going to do purple.

Unfortunately us dark haired girls the purple, blue, reds don't show up on our hair. You really have to have it bleached first because the home kits you can only darken not lighten your hair.

  4. I have brown hair and have dyed my hair pretty much every color

But I have never been purple HMM? lol I know that I have to choose a color about 2 shades lighter than what the box says and too stay away from golden colors unless I want very reddish highlights. I once did black cherry and it was kinda reddish purple in the sun but faded to a horrible "Ronald Mcdonald" color. I buy colors lighter and ashier  to stay away from the mistakes ive made. Hope this helps

best of luck and God bless :)
