My 10 year old really wants to dye her hair and get highlights. I keep telling her dye is bad for childrens hair and she keeps arguing and saying that it isn't. Is dye in kids hair bad?

  1. YOUR THE PARENT AND IF YOU SAY NO THEN NO IS NO! YOU DONT HAVE TO PROVIDE ANY "EXCUSE" FOR HER NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THEM. MAYBE WHEN SHES 15-16.

  2. Is not bad, but you can come to an agreement if you want to keep this very silly argument from getting out of control.  When my daughter was 7 (yes I said 7) she wanted to paint her hair....PINK!  Instead of freaking out and starting an argument I told her that I was going to let her paint the tips of her hair only.  She was happy and so was I.  If at the end she didn't like it, the only thing to do was to cut the tips (about 4 inches) and that will solve the problem.  It worked just fine.

    Good luck!

  3. As a cosmo, I can tell you honestly that highlighting does damage your hair, it takes the color our of the hair, and strips it's natural oils.  It causes breakage if not done by a professional or someone who knows exactly what they are doing, but you can prevent some damage from occurring by limiting the amount of hair you are doing, and by how much you are lightening it to.  I'm not saying that the hair you do highlight won't damage, I'm saying you can limit the damage, and if she wants color, go with temporary colors, that wash out over time and doesn't deposit color, or go with a semi-perminent color, that lasts a little longer but washes out within twenty to twenty five washes.  I personally think that as a parent, at her age, a few little highlights won't really hurt anything, and there are products out there that conditions the hair and brings it back to being healthy, and you do need to pick and choose your battles.  As a cosmo, I know that anything you use on your hair can damage it because it takes away the normal pH of you hair, even washing it!  Hope this has helped some, good luck to ya.

  4. Bleach does damage the hair a little bit, but hair grows out.  Putting some bleach in your hair isn't a big deal.  The bit of fun you get from changing your hair color and your look is definitely worth it.  :)  If you're talking about color dyes, there's no problem with that.  I used to dye my hair crazy colors in my early-mid teens with Manic Panic - temporary dye.  It's just fun, I don't see the harm in it.  If it makes you feel more comfortable, tell her she has to wait until she's 12 or 13 or something.

  5. It won't hurt her, but it might damage her hair.

Highlights probably aren't a big deal, but I certainly wouldn't let her do anything drastic.

  6. sure let her die her hair so she can look older...cuz thats all she wants,  to look older and cooler.  Next thing u knw she'll be sneakin little boys in and smoking pot in her closet

  7. Most salons won't dye or perm girls hair now until they have hit  and gone thru puberty because it won't take very well.  And most girls hit this change in life anywhere from age 9 to 13. I would just have her wait.

  8. Try the temporary ones that are different colors my dd loves hers and it washes out at night.

Last year I put several thin strips of permant color in her hair just at the end of spring beggining of summer.  Kinda looked like the sun did it.  By school time. she wanted her hair cut off anyway.  I would never consider a full head dye job at that age.

  9. No it is fine and I would just let her do it so she can see how damaging it is for hair. You could also suggest getting fake hair placed with her hair-extensions. But I dyed my hair around the same age and it just grows back like anyone's hair.

  10. Yes.  It has harsh chemicals that can damage hair.  If you repeatedly use a poor quality home dye, in some cases it can cause cancer.

Tell your daughter that she can dye her hair when she has the money to pay for the entire professional treatment herself.

What are we teaching our 10 year olds?  That they'll only be acceptable to their peers if they adorn their bodies?  Crazy.

  11. Dye is bad for any hair actually.  She's a child, she doesn't need her hair dyed...Stand up and be a parent for crying out loud.

  12. yes it is potentially bad and she is way to young for it id wait til she is at least 15

  13. No it is not harmful to children to get their hair colored. It is more that salons usually need parents to sign a waiver because of age.

I find more and more children are getting highlights and color at 10 and up. I would say it is really your decision, maybe try something demi- perment, washes out in 6 washings the first time. This way it can be something  that you can try with not having to commit to coloring more than once.

  14. It can ruin her hair yes

  15. My 7yo wanted tips in his hair this year for school. I let him get 4 foils.

The majority of kids here have their hair dyed when they start school. I would let her, but that is me.

  16. It really depends on their hair. My oldest daughter has thick hair and it permed well at 5 yrs of age, that was 10 yrs ago but my youngest is 11 and with as fine of hair she has I wouldn't do that. Just depends. Take her to a stylist and get a professional opinion on it.
