Dying bird?

my bird bites itself, and its bloody all over. Its been worse and worse. Today was like really bad. it was bloody all over the underside of the wing. it bites itself near the shoulders and under the his arms. I went to the vet a long time ago and it costed about $70. I can tell that the avian vet was clueless about what was happening. she gave us a spray bottle. Inside was some sour stuff to discourage the bird from self mutilation, or biting itself. It didnt work at all. Now the bird is in the cage just sitting there. it bites itself all the time, and at night sometimes i can hear it crying while biting itself. It is a lovebird and has a budgey friend. he is a happy lovebird, sits on my shoulder and flies around the house. It eats a mixture of seeds with stuff mixed in like sunflower seeds, etc. I recently got a bag of treats which contain stuff like coconut, papaya, banana and stuff... that avian vet was the only vet in the nearby cities. she is really clueless about what she is doin

  1. put something on its beek, wrap tape on the beek or something,May sound stupid but it should work as a temporary solution until you find a good vet

Your bird should not be eating sunflower seeds and only a small amount of other seeds.  He should be eating fresh veggies/greens  and some pellets.  Most people don't realise that a seed only diet can cause a lot of other illnesses.  Your bird could have an underlying illness which is causing him to pluck.  Did your vet do any blood tests or a gram stain?  Feather picking can also be caused by heavy metal poisoning, internal and external parasites, etc.  Your bird really needs to see a vet now!

  3. I really do not know what to tell you besides sneaking it out of the country to get it to a avian vet that knows what it is doing! Try calling bird breeders around you and seeing if they could help you out at all. I have a bird of my own and I would never ever want to see him go through that. I am really sorry about it and hope my advice helps you at all.

  4. I have a cockatail, and I was searching for something familar. By what I'm reliaizing is that you have no access to any avain flu docs or chemichals. Now here's what I'd do if I were in your situation. Risk breaking interationail laws, and getting punished, or try cleaning out the cage, you should have access to mite spray, spray the wet spots, or the whle perch if it's dry and you don't know, wash you bird with some soap, rub ur hand against the soap bar and put in water and wash the bird, don't get of it near it's head, and dry it up, my chockatail will dive in a bowl of water sometimes if he's hot or ichty, so i dnt know your might not be used, so just wash it, and dnt put it the cage for a day, if it's all okay, put it in the cage and see what happens, if she/he it's self again, do the same thing again, and throw the cage away, if she/he gets worse, just realize that the bird would be better off, i had a gerbil which died, we coulda had them take the water out of he's her body but that would only cause it to fill up again, and put her in pain, sometimes it's better to just let it go, they'll be better off when they shed they're tired bodys, and don't sue me or anything if sommin happens to your bird, not goanna be held responisble for anything you do. goodluck

  5. Hi There

I dont think your bird is dying at all - There could be a couple of reasons for your bird doing this -

Firstly have you sprayed all the wooden/tree branch perches with a mite & lice spray?  Even if your bird does not have mites or lice you still need to treat the perches.  If the perches get wet for any reason it is a very good idea to respray the area that got wet.  Birds who have mites dig at their feathers and pull them out constantly.  And it may very well be painful for the bird.  I'm not sure if the spray your vet gave you was mite spray - probebly just something to try and stop the bird.  Something sour tasting wont stop a bird from biting and itching - it is similar to a human having head lice - very hard to control.  If your bird does have mites it is very simple to treat.  You will need to purchase a bottle of the mite and lice spray (you can get this from your local pet shop or city farmers etc) and you need to spray directly onto the bird (the bottle will tell you how far away).  It would also be a good idea to give the whole cage a cleanout and then spray the whole cage down with it - this included perches, toys, and anything else that your bird comes into contact with.  Obviously dont spray it in their water or on their seed.

The other thing it could be is boredom.  Birds self mutilate themselves when they are bored.  Does your bird have plenty of toys and interaction with yourself or others?  This is very common for birds that live in a cage alone with minimal toys etc to keep them occupied.

As I'm not sure of your circumstances I am not sure which one is more likely but I hope the information I have given you will help!

  6. well im sory but all i can say is do u have another lovebird cauz lovebirds  cuz can get deprkpressed if they dont have another bird  of the same type so i would give that a shot then if that dont work the i got nothin

  7. Until you come up with a permanent solution, go to your local feed store. They should have a product for chickens. It is a goop that you coat the spots with and it stops agressive pecking. Maybe that will stop it for now.

  8. This is clearly serious enough to need a vet.  If you don't like the vet you tried, you could try one of:

I'm not local (1800 km away), so I can't tell you much about any of them (and one could be the one you already tried).  I suggest you call and talk to them and see if you can't find one you're comfortable with.  Do it immediately.
