I have a pair of black and white zebra print jeans. The material is denim (obvioiusly). Can I dye them turquoise so that the white part will be turquoise and the black part will stay black? How? Step by step instructions please!

  1. It will probably work the way you want it to because the turquoise is lighter than the black, so the black will show through the dye.  That is, only if the denim fabric is 100% cotton, if there is ANY percentage of synthetic fiber you will not be happy with the results because sythetic fibers don't take dye well (comes out blotchy).  I would use the RIT liquid dye for this project which you mainly find in the discounters (grocery stores usually only sell the powder) or craft stores (like JoAnn).  Use the hot water washing machine method on the package.  Fill the tub with the hottest water setting on the machine.  Since you are only dying one garment fill with enough water to fully submerge the garment.  Before adding the garment, add the dye and agitate to mix.  I usually leave the garment soaking for several hours until I get the color saturation I desire.  Then I add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse water and allow the garment to go through a wash, rinse and spin cycle.  Immediately upon removing the garment I run a load of rags with at least a cup of bleach.  I generally heat set the dye in the dryer.
