well according to tonights standings, the chinese have equalled the total of gold's the US accumulated in the Athens games and we are only halfway through. I can't see US catching in the gold standings, but maybe the total medal count. The sprints are already dominated by the Jamaicians. Many other track and fields already won by non-US countries.

The U.S. will most likely win the most medals overall, with 1-4 odds, approximately 80% chance.  China is listed at 2-5 odds to win most gold medals, approximately 71.4% chance, but the site doesn't update the gold medal odds as often as it does the medal table odds.  I'd say China's chances to win most gold medals have slightly increased, as they have already have won 35 gold medals, equaling the U.S.'s total in Athens.  The U.S. traditionally wins around 10 gold medals in athletics, but the gap between the U.S. and China is currently 16 gold medals.

The U.S. should win enough medals overall to increase the gap between them and China for medals overall, but they most likely won't catch up in gold medal count.
