  1. If you had an IEP in public school, take it into the college's disabilities office. They are required to provide any accommodations on the IEP. If you don't have one, you must have documented proof that you have this learning disability. Perhaps the college can do the testing.

Unfortunately the word "dyscalculia" doesn't really tell what the underlying learning disabilities are that are causing the problem. Often it can be a visual spatial processing issue, underlying receptive language problems or memory deficits.

Some accommodations that would be helpful are:

*Photocopy of notes verbalized in lecture.

*Extra time or shortened tests or classwork.

Desk copy of anything shown on the board or overhead.

*Allow calculator or math facts table

*Provide diagrams of concepts to be learned.

Some things that you can do:

*Use graph paper so you can make straight columns.

*Draw pictures or diagrams of the concept

*Use different color pencils for every other problem

    *Draw pictures of word problems

*Make up mneumonic chants to remember steps

  2. talk to the school about resources for a documented learning disability.  no demands needed.
