  2. Which 'learned' people are they?

  3. Dyslexia is not another word for dumb. It is a condition where the person has problems with spelling and sometimes can see the words written backwards. I knew of a lady who studied law and she is extremely smart, but has this dyslexia problem. This didn't stop her from furthering her studies and she had a marriage and two of her daughters ended up getting dyslexia too, but they are both smart in school.

  4. Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

  5. No. I am. I'm very intelligent. It basically means it's harder to read correctly so it's harder to pick things up. SOMETIMES. It's IGNORANT to think people are 'dumb', and think that people are unintelligent for something they can't help. Their are tons of genus people who suffer from dyslexia.

  6. which learned people would those be?

I only headr that from ignornat people.

People with dyslexia are often very smart-so how could dyslexuia be anotehr word for dumb

  7. Yes it does exist, and just because you have a learning disability, it doesn't mean that you are 'dumb'. Many artists, inventors etc. had learning disabilities. Albert Einstein believe it or not, was actually dyslexic and he was a genius!

Here's a list of famous people who have dyslexia, after looking at this I think you'll find that people with dyslexia are most definitely not stupid!

Steve Jobs (Founder of Apple Computers)

    Cher

    Walt Disney

    Thomas Edison (inventor)

    Pablo Picasso

    Hans Christian Anderson

    Leonardo da Vinci

    Richard Branson

    Sir Winston Churchill

    Henry Ford

    Whoopi Goldberg

    John F. Kennedy

    Steven Spielberg

    George Washington

  8. No people with this are not dumb thankyou my sister inlaw has it and just completed her level 3 in child care so not she is not dumb.

  9. No.. it's a condition. If it didn't exist, it wouldn't be diagnosed, would it? It's in my family - one uncle and my brother. He's VERY intelligent, just struggles writing down things sometimes. He's a strong reader, and has mild dyspraxia too... but that's not just another word for spastic is it? People are people.. if they have a name for their little problems, then why should we disrespect that?

  10. Dyslexics are most certainly not dumb, dyslexia is very real. Dyslexia is a brain disorder where the brain misinterprets information it sees such as letters, numbers and or symbols.

The top link below shows what dyslexics see when trying to read, often worse when tired etc.

I have dyslexia and could not read until I was 14, and I always thought myself to be dumb, even being treated as such by many teachers, because they could not work out why I would excel in some subjects, but could not read.

As an adult a Neurologist and a Psychologist had me do IQ test, at different times one Stanford-Binet and the other Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), both test showed that my IQ is above average.

  11. No i do not agree & I think that is a very ignorant opinion to have!

  12. All the answers here verify that those 'learned people' who think that dyslexia is another word for dumb, are actually not learned people at all ...perhaps THEY themselves are dumb.

PS. Heart Hammer's list of celebrities is also good proof that dyslexics are not dumb.

  13. yse thyr si

  14. no.

  15. no i don't agree people with dyslexia are not dumb they have just go a disability and cant read, write or spell very well

  16. tut tut pen, dyslexia is real and there are plenty of people who struggle with it every day, my husband for one.

  17. I am a very "learned" person with a superior IQ who could read at a college level when I was 10 and I am diagnosed with mild dyslexia.  Mostly it effects my ability to transcribe and read numbers, although I learned early on to get around it.  I don't know any educated people who consider being dyslexic the same as being dumb.  Two friends of mine who graduated with honors from Ivy League Universities are diagnosed dyslexic.  I think that you must not be very educated if you are asking this question.

  18. my hubby is dyslexic and he isn't dumb or lazy, he is a clever guy with a real good job who just doesn't read too well....he had a bad time at school because of it but it doesn't affect his every day life.....his favourite joke is did you hear about the dyslexic devil worshipper?  he sold his sole to Santa

  19. i actually believe it to be a legimitate "malfunction", and do not find it to be at all synonymous with "dumb". like most things, it certainly can be, but not mutually exclusive.

i am slightly lysdexic and so was my grandpa, who was extremely intelligent. however i did have trouble making my "s" correctly as a child. i would receive sheets and sheets of dotted "s"s to copy and repeat in the correct direction. as soon as those dots were gone and it was up to me, they immediately were backward again.

ive had the similar experience with numbers, though only saying them in my head they are backward. i usually will write them in the correct order.

additionally i had the same problem in taking baton. as soon as my wrists were given back to me to twirl a "pancake" theyd immediate tell me to do it backward. perhaps its all just an unconscious drive to non-conformity?

i was not breech birth though; i believe my mental capacity is at least close to others around me who do not see the world in a skewed microscope.

  20. absolutely not. its a laerning disability that affects the persons accedemic skill not their social interaction with people

  21. No I don't agree. All dyslexia is that you see letters or numbers backwards. My youngest son has it. Several people have it. They are all very intelligent people.

  22. by saying that dumb is another word for dyslexic you are calling my friend dumb. my friend is not dumb therefore dyslexic is not another word for dumb.

(shes is also pro-skiier in our county)

so in ur FACE-ial hair :P

  23. Not at all.

It is a mental block in the brain and not a sign of intelligence levels at all.

  24. Most people who have dyslexia are multi-dimensional Thinkers. They are the inventors, freethinkers, imaginative and creative. People who have dyslexia think in pictures, rather than words. We see things from a different perspective. Thats why dyslexics change our world. We need to view people for what they can do rather what they can't.

  25. no I don't agree as there is a big difference between illiteracy and dyslexia, as a child I had what was called left hand dyslexia, and i copied things from the blackboard  into my exercise books but it was a miior image of what was on the board over a year or so this was corrected. A few years ago I took the  mensa test I failed but only by 2 points, I know of a few more dyslexics that have very high I.Qs

  26. Most definitely not! I work with children who have dyslexia and they are very much brighter then most. Let's see, Albert Eisenstein, Rockefeller, Thomas Edison. They too were dyslexic. I dare any one to call them dumb!
