What is the proper response timeframe range for an e-mail reply to something you send a friend or acquaintance? Is it 1-5 days or something else?

  1. more than 2 weeks would be unacceptable

  2. It really depends on the e-mail. When you are sending the e-mail, you should also allow some response time. For example, if you are sending an e-mail to your boss saying you will not be able to complete a project on time, and the project is due within 3 days, then that is a big no-no. First, because that is just too late of a notice, and the boss probably won't check it until day 2! When sending e-mails regarding due dates, dates for events etc, always send them at least a week in advance to allow for sufficient response time and also to let your boss know what else he can do.

The usual response time, if it's just a casual letter, I would allow up to a week. I know a lot of people don't check their e-mail frequently, and many use Facebook or instant messenger to communicate or just phone. And some don't have computer access, in this case, give them a week and a half (if it's casual).

If it's business related, or urgent, then up to 3-4 days (if you sent it giving them a week time).

    Hope this helps :D

  3. Depends on how urgent it is.

Also, it's August now and people go on vacation (many stay away from computers), so I would cut some slack.

  4. I personally think one should respond to an email as soon as they receive it, time-permitting.  If that's not possible, then it depends on the content of the email.  Is it a forward (like one of those silly quizzes?) - then perhaps you need not reply.  Is it an invitation?  If so, then make sure you reply within the RSVP period.  If it is a friendly "catch up" sort of email, you should reply as soon as possible - however you should have enough time to write it properly - ie; if it is a relatively long email, make sure you address any questions and try and make the email a similar length.  If you do not have time to do so, you should send a quick note explaining that you have received the email, are very busy with work etc and you will send a proper reply in the coming days when things quieten down.
