E tec outboards?

Hello,

While I am pretty set on a 4 stroke, i would like to hear what you make of the e-tec. Mainly, when there is a 3yr service free start, if I get it checked before then how does this affect my warranty, also anyone who has owned one, especially around the 75 hp mark, would love to hear what you think of it. Fuel economy from what I have read is not too flash hot, regardless of what "Mr Im-out-to-fleece-u" salesman says, Anyone else that has a 70hp of any brand, 4 stroke or etec, I would love to hear about it (also customer service too)

cheers

  1. A storage customer of mine has a Evi 70 hp ETEC and has experienced nothing but trouble with it. Each season it goes into the shop for one thing or another. Seems the guys can't solve a power/fuel system issue. My client has now had enough and will be selling/trading the boat this year.

  2. I have a 90 e-tec on the back of my 17ft Smoker Craft Aluminum.  I love it because it out performs a 4-stroke. (my buddy has a Yamaha 4 stroke)  Power is more important to me and a 2 stroke will outperform a 4 stroke any day of the week.

I don't believe having it checked or serviced within that 3 year mark will void your warranty.

Buy what you want, but I looked at a couple things that the e-tec could do that a 4 stroke couldn't

    1.) Power

2.) Pretty close to same fuel economy

3.) Lighter (my buddies boat with a 4 stands straight up)

    4.) Just as quiet

5.) Less moving parts (less to go wrong)

6.) I've heard rumors that they are having problems with the cylinder walls glazing over when guys troll with a 4 stroke

If I was going to purchase a pontoon then yes give me a 4 stroke (even though the rumor), but once again a 2 stroke devolops power earlier on to get you on plane quicker.

Oh and about the power......just look at dirt bikes or quads.  When ever a 4 stroke raced a 2 stroke they would run larger engines just to keep up.  (to run against a 250cc 2 stroke a guy would have to run a 400-450cc 4 stroke)

    Hope this helps
