EA Sports announce latest game Shahid Afridi Cricket 2012, set to hit stores in April next year
Cricket fans have something to cheer about as games developer, EA Sports has announced that they are set to release a new series of cricket games in the future with Pakistan cricketer, Shahid Afridi, as the face of the series.
Electronic Arts have tried in the past to make a cricket simulation title throughout the years, yet none managed to capture the market or make too much of name for itself either. In fact, not many remember EA Sports Cricket 07 or Cricket 08 very well and the market for cricket games has always had a gaping hole.
Speaking at a press conference at the EA Sports Headquarters, the head of EA Sports Vancouver, Francis de Blanc stated, “We are aware of the lack of quality cricket titles in the market today and see it as an opportunity to expand the EA Sports brand.”
He went on to explain that the game would look to take advantage of the improvements in technology since the last game was released, “We were really limited with what we could do in the previous games in terms of technology. Cricket is a fairly technical game and slight variations in bowling and batting make huge differences in matches, which was something we could not replicate yet now with the way the industry and the technology have grown, we can raise it to a whole new level and deliver a true recreation of the sport.”
Apparently, the game will be based around a new engine which has been developed from scratch at the developer’s studio. The engine will rely less on animations and every single bowl and shot will be unique and unscripted.
He added, “That is what really excites us, to know that every delivery and every shot will have a different outcome. It is not going to be as simple as holding down a direction and pressing a button. Both bowlers and batsmen will have to think and adapt their game for every delivery.”
He also went on to state that the studio were doing their best in order to make sure that the game would be glitch free. “We know that the previous games had plenty of glitches which gamers exploited in terms of hitting boundaries and for taking wickets and this time around we have set out not to make the same mistakes.”
It all sounded pretty exciting yet without any screenshots or gameplay to show, there was an air of skepticism in the room as to whether the game would turn out to be as good as monsieur de Blanc was promising.
Almost as if he was reading everyone’s minds, a curtain was raised with an oversized cover of the new game. Pakistan’s talismanic all rounder, Shahid Afridi, was on the cover with his name and ‘12’ next to it. It is still early days but from what we could gather from the press conference, it seems that cricket fans finally have something to look forward to.
When quizzed about a possible release date, de Blanc replied, “We are aiming to release the game on the 1st of April.”
