Electronic Arts felt that EA did not live up to hype due to the fact that neither Sony nor Microsoft showed off their next-gen consoles, however the studio does believe that timing is everything.
Despite the fact that representatives from both Sony and Microsoft denied the fact that they would be unveiling any new hardware during the 2012 E3, every gamer and journalist harboured hope in the back of their minds that the two platform developers may just surprise everyone.
However, that turned out to not be the case and one publisher, Electronic Arts, feels that the lack of next-gen made E3 half the show it normally would have been had there been a mention of the PS4 or Xbox 720.
Frank Gibeau, the president of EA Labels, was on hand to shed some light on his employer’s point of view when he explained that although he expected no next-gen console talk during the press conference, it was not something to be worried about.
"It's fairly natural, like with the PS2 to PS3 transition, and PSOne to PS2, that year before the big change. And the Wii U is really just the first opening act of the next-gen cycle shift.”
He went to on to state, "You're only really getting half a show this year. You're getting Wii U but you're not getting the other half of the story so it's a bit awkward. Didn't think it was the right time to show off its’ own next-gen titles at this year's show.”
He explained that rather than just show a simple tech-demo that had little to no context, it would be better for developers and publishers to wait until the console had reached a stage where they could show off actual gameplay instead of pre-rendered material, which could be taken as a hint towards Sony’s infamous Killzone 2 trailer.
Gibeau said, "It's better to show something of substance. Gamers are smart and they'll figure out if what you're showing is a pre-rendered movie.”
Analysts are predicting that the PS4 and Xbox 720 will both be revealed at E3 next year and ought to be available in the market by the end of 2013 or early 2014.
