EA claim they are not targeting Activision’s Call of Duty series with Battlefield 3
The tension between Electronic Arts and Activision has been building up steadily since both the titles were announced earlier in the year. However, EA seem to want to bring the intensity down a notch by insisting they are not targeting the Call of Duty franchise
with Battlefield 3, but are rather more focused on delivering the best that they can with their game.
Patrick Bash, the executive producer behind the eagerly anticipated Battlefield 3, stated, “Honestly, we're not trying to go after CoD. Of course there will be crossover - it's a first-person shooter, it's modern-day, and there are resemblances on locations,
even - we're all inspired by the same media and the world around us.”
Patrick obviously knew what he was talking about, seeing how the level of realism both games try to achieve in the same setting will result in a number of similarities, yet he also insisted that Battlefield 3 was looking to set itself apart by giving gamers
a unique experience.
Or as he put it, “But to be a star you need to play your own songs.”
The has been a growing rift in the world of gaming as gamers choose to side with one game or the other, any comment on a Battlefield or Modern Warfare video on YouTube will testify to that.
This is not the first time one publisher has made comments relating to its competitor, as Activision and EA have been at each others throats for quite some time.
Activision termed Battlefield as an engine rather than a game, claiming that when it comes to gameplay Call of Duty will always be the preferred choice, while EA wowed everyone with the trailers for their own first person shooter.
There was also an incident at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), where EA denied an Activision representative from entering their booth. However, EA seem to want to make peace, so to speak, more than Activision as they were sympathetic during
the leak at the latter’s studio.
Patrick, however, explained that Battlefield 3 was different to its competitor and that it would ultimately be up to the gamer which game he prefers.
“We have so many things in our game that aren't a part of Modern Warfare, so it really comes down to personal preference. You choose based on the depth you want, the maturity level, your own personal taste... it's all about how you get your fix.”
Both games are set to release around the holiday season and gamers can expect the war of words between the two developers to continue even sometime after their respective releases.
