Electronic Arts is set to hit the next generation of home consoles ‘ground’ running and conceded that it was currently working on 3-5 new IPs.
For those who do not know what an IP is it would be best to clear it up at this point. IP basically stands for Intellectual Property and is anything related to a particular idea or concept, specifically developed by a studio.
FIFA is an IP for EA Sports, as the studio owns the rights and the licenses of the series with no other publisher or developer able to develop games with the same name. Crysis and Killzone are IPs of EA and Sony respectively with no other publisher able to reproduce material based on those two intellectual properties.
Frank Gibeau, the EA Labels President, pointed out that, “The introduction of new hardware from the big three is going to allow us to re-embark on a bunch of new IPs, because it’s the better time to do it, because you can really explore new ideas and do different things.”
He continued by explaining how the current generation of gaming consoles had a highly competitive market when it came to content and that experimentation at this stage was riskier compared to if a new console was being introduced. He said, “In a market this massive, launching new IPs is very risky and it’s a big investment to make these games. So the natural things to see in this point in the cycle a little but more emphasis on the knowns, but in the new cycle you’re going to see a lot of new IP from Electronic Arts.”
EA showed off eight titles during their E3 Press Conference, one of which was a new IP as the studio revealed that they had struck a deal with the UFC to ensure all future games in the series would be developed by EA Sports.
Gibeau also gave everyone a rough approximate of how many new IPs were currently in development. Gamers can expect to hear about three to five new IPs from the studio to be unveiled alongside the announcement of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720.
