EA responds to Battlefield 3’s Battlelog claims, No Call of Duty: Elite type fee – News
In the ongoing war between Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 3, it seems that each publisher is trying its best to do the other, as EA announced that their equivalent of Activision’s Call of Duty: Elite, Battlelog,
will be absolutely free.
Activision has been going on about Elite for quite some time, teasing it to gamers before revealing all the details later on. Electronic Arts have been much more straightforward though and left the marketing focus on the game itself (which is all $50-million
of the marketing budget).
EA made the following announcement, "We are providing Battlelog to Battlefield 3 players to deliver the best social, multiplayer FPS experience in the market.” The honest fact of the matter is that statements like these do not mean anything in the world
we live in, unless of course they are backed up with facts.
The facts came in the form of the next few sentences where the spokesperson continued, “We have no plans to charge for this service with Battlefield 3. The Battlefield series has always been about playing with friends, and Battlelog takes that experience
to the next level by serving as a unique social network."
So it is official, Battlelog will start off free and will remain free to use in the foreseeable future. Last sentence of the statement though was a bit of a slight towards their Call of Duty rivals, as it hinted that Battlelog would focus more on giving
gamers what they wanted rather than charging them for that service.
However, EA did not just come out of the blue and announced this for no reason. The press release follows a statement by one of the gaming industry’s many analysts.
Michael Pachter, the aforementioned analyst, explained what the Battlelog would offer gamers and listed its various features, which included, friend list management, social networking tools, squad set up and platoon setup as well.
However, the kicker was the final bit of his statement which read, “Ultimately, we expect Electronic Arts to emulate Activision and charge for Battlelog by including map packs with the service for a $50 fee."
Apparently, EA seem to think highly of Mr. Patcher as they countered the statement swiftly with their own announcement of Battlelog being free. With competition between the Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 so intense, it may just well be the little things
which make the difference come the game’s release dates.
Bettor.com will keep readers posted on more updates on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 versus Battlefield 3 rivalry as and when they happen.
